Dear West Elm,

Saw these in person and I would like to thank you for making pre-made graphic panels, they look great. Now, if you could just line your curtains I could start using them. Lack of lining drives me nuts, rarely can I use an unlined panel. I want to end on a positive note though. I originally pinned this picture because it made me think of Patrick and me, we are so busy that we have to consciously work to make sure we give each other the time we need. Then when thinking about what to write today this popped in my head....I am pretty sure it was God reminding me of the same thing with Him.

Speaking of time spent with God....When I was pregnant a friend gave me a daily pregnancy devotional which I loved. To be honest I had never read a daily devotional before. I would love to start that again, just a little something to begin or the end the day with. Any good recommendations?

Sometimes weeks just end up being hard, as was the case the last two weeks for us. Nothing serious, just one thing after another. As my Mom says....never ask "what next?" In midst of the craziness though I have had many cheerleaders- phone calls checking in, numerous pep talks, others willing to think for me when I couldn't. So, I wanted to say to you thank you for your words of encouragement. For picking me up, dusting me off and saying "on you go, don't worry you will make it through". Sometimes the smallest gestures make a world of difference.

I didn't have a picture for this post but what is a post without a picture? I have had a lot of people inquiry about Henry. He is great! A more in depth post about work, juggling, etc. coming soon. Thank you for asking. In the mean time here a picture taken last week. Cute little chunk if I do say so myself.

Office Update

Almost every week I get a request to see the office now...and every week I think how I really need to work on "finishing" the office. Well, it turns out the office is just like my house and on the perpetual back burner. However, when a peer walked into the office the other day and exclaimed, "Now this looks like a working office", I had to laugh. Not only because it was a great way to describe the current state, but also because it was a rather good day.....

Nevertheless, we tidied up a bit....only to be overtaken by deliveries. This is after we made ourselves a path...

The office will not be finished soon, or maybe ever, but in the near future it will be to suitable point for display. Until that day though, here is the latest change that I am excited about...pink! Just a touch of the unexpected in a very masculine space.

More to come....like proving to you that I am actually very organized!

Recently I mentioned how I remember building jobs by the progression of weather and visualize the family living in the home down the road, always in a different season. This one is no different. Even though this was a dreary and rainy day, when I looked at the house all I saw was a family relaxing in the sun at the lake.

*This job is at a lake 2 hours outside of Birmingham and this is the day that worked for all of us....just wanted to put that out there in case you are wondering why we didn't just come back when the weather was better.

Client Progress...Seasons of Change

How you remember time is an interesting thing. With building clients my memories of the job are often tied directly to the weather since building from the ground up progresses through many seasons. Last winter I sat across from a new client at a local Starbucks (pre office days) and we discussed her future home that was being drawn up. It was cold and dreary outside but the images of a place the family could nest for years to come kept us warm. I also clearly remember telling her I was pregnant, "but not to worry, we will work around it".

Quickly the winter turned into spring and as the days got longer we used the extra daylight to study and debate decisions like type of brick and various counter tops and tile options.

And then came the HEAT and the bump was in full force. Oh those many July and August days on the various job sites, they were something else....

The months continued to fly by and here we find ourselves again; winter bringing the cold weather back, only this time the house is no longer a dream. I stopped by on Monday to see the progress and it was a great way to start the new year. Months of dreaming and planning coming to fruition....and good looking fruition at that.

Can you see the memories that will be made in this kitchen? I can. The best thing about being an Interior Decorator is not the creative outlet (although that is a huge perk), it is working with people to make a house their home. Large job or small, it always feels just as good.

Sneak peek: A slate backsplash and gorgeous counter tops (hard to see in this picture) = a good time in the upstairs entertaining/guest area.

Oh those countertops I am so obsessed with.....

And as much fun as this day was, I know even better days are ahead in the coming weeks...move in day! Beauties like these will be unwrapped and placed in their permanent home. Of course everything takes time and I know when the warm winds of Spring arrive we will think back to this cold day and how far everything has come, all the while knowing more seasons will come and go before we are ever "finished". And that is okay.

First, thank you for the e-mails and comments about Henry's nursery, details to come....in the new year. Second, sorry for lack of posts there after, we have been busy. I have been trying to get work to the point were we can take next week off and Henry has been busy with his Grandfather....

Doing fun things like meeting Santa for the first time.....Henry's first Santa photo followed by margaritas and mexican food with Patrick, Dad and Henry = an excellent start to the week.

This week I finally got to catch up on some blog reading and I have been following Beneath the Acacia Tree and their adoption process for a long time now. They have been way up and way down and even though I don't know them, reading along with their story has been so moving. They are a great example of faith in God's plan even when His plan seems nonexistent. I was so excited to read everything is finally really happening. I am sure they would appreciate any prayers over the next few weeks....

After that post I made way over to Three Peanuts where I was introduced to Casa de Alegria and a beautiful story of a family adopting from China as we speak. As stated in the post title on Three Peanuts, if ever a picture was worth a thousand words this is it. Thank you for sharing your story, prayers headed your way as well.

Finally, on a different note, I met a man yesterday who lost his job and is looking for another. Please pray for him as well.

This weekend I started working on the Christmas card. One of these years I am going to really be on the ball and get creative....but this is not the year. In fact, I am so not "on the ball", it looks like our Christmas card is also going to serve as Henry's birth announcement. Yes, he was born on August 25th and somehow his announcement has not materialized yet. All that to say, next year (cough, cough) when I do get it together, I am going to use these as inspiration....

It Is The Little Things

Comfort is often found in the little things. This picture holds 4 things currently making me happy: a space heater, the unfinished walls that give the office an industrial/rustic feel, putting on slippers during the day, new boots*.

*I have been on a boot hunt for months, I have looked at/ordered more pairs than one person should. On my wish list was a pair of boots I could wear under jeans- not tall in length but tall in heel height while still being comfortable. And do you know where I found my favorites? Ol' Target. They are comfortable and since I was prepared to pay wayyyyyy more I can continue my hunt for more shoes (currently looking for tall gray dress boots). Boots here.

Tomorrow...Ugh, Here We Go

Tomorrow Henry starts daycare and I would be lying if I told you I was completely okay with that. I have been dreading this day for a while now. It is not that I don't want to go back to work; if you work for yourself you know "maternity leave" is a fictional event. Henry and I have been working basically since he was born. This juggling act- having a newborn and working- has worked basically by taking him everywhere with me when our parents weren't in town to watch over him. We have amazing parents but when they are not here he has been content to nap at client's homes, showrooms, etc. Well except for the fit he pitched last week at a house (talk about feeling unprofessional, thank goodness for amazing clients as well).

Above pulling fabric with his Mom, below waiting patiently at the receiving warehouse for furniture to be loaded. (the guys at the warehouse are great with him, a plus in my book)
In some ways I am looking forward to having a routine and this not being a sight seen one too many times in my car...

Also, I am sure Henry gets tired of running errands all the time (note the expression)....

And while I may not be winning any mother-of-the-year awards anytime soon I have loved all this time spent together. We have a schedule that works for us and it is nice to be working along and catch a glimpse of that face.

Tomorrow though change is coming. I know it will be fine if I can just get past the first few days. I LOVE my job and that makes it so much easier. The place he is going came highly recommended by several friends and that is comforting. It is just the thought of someone else feeding him and holding him and playing with him all day gives me a lump in my throat the size of Texas. So for those of you who have been through this and have any advice I would love to hear it. Talking to other mothers has been wonderful so far and made me feel so much better. I have a feeling I am going to need some help tomorrow....

This is going to be a wordy post with only one picture which in the blog world = a bad post, so please forgive me. It is the week of Thanksgiving and I have so much to be thankful for it is hard to know where to begin. There have been so many changes this year, for the better. So, I will begin with why I chose this picture, taken move in day to the office, which should cover almost everything.

1. I took this picture when I was 6 or 7 months pregnant. Now Henry has been here 12 weeks and I can't imagine life without him. (okay two pictures)

2. Family. While this picture only shows Patrick and my Dad, my Mom was standing right beside me. Oh November has been C-C-C-razy, working before getting into daycare has been hard, even with the most understanding clients anyone could ask for. Every single one of our parents has come to the 'Ham to help and thank you doesn't even begin to feel adequate. Our lives would be so much less without an amazing support system and the love of our family. A special thank you to my Mom who not only has blazed down I-65 from Nashville several times in a matter of weeks, but also has helped us stay on top of the seemingly unending paperwork.

3. As previously stated the first picture was taken while moving into my new office, it still feels great. From moving into an office, to hiring a new employee this year the business has continued to be blessed. Some days I want to have a large pity party for myself because I work really hard. I hope that does not sound horrible, but it is true. Every time I feel a pity party coming on, I am quickly reminded how thankful I am to do what I love and work for myself. Over the last few months two of my very first clients are back with new homes and reflecting on our first meetings years ago versus now is special. Have I mentioned before how much I love my clients? Love. In December I will have more help and I hope to be able to really start sharing more with you. Professional pictures are really coming this time.....at least that is on the agenda.

4. Not shown but high on my thankful list are our friends. They have always been wonderful but the help we have had since having Henry is humbling. From the meals to the phone calls checking in on me multiple times (even knowing I probably would not be able to answer) we are surrounded by the most wonderful people. So many of my best friends live far away but they have never felt so close.

Finally, I would like to thank you dear blog reader. I feel like I have been a horrible blogger for a few months now and I am not sure when I will really be able to devote more time to H&H as well as reading other blogs. I do plan on continuing blogging though and hopefully balance will resume soon. I want you to know that I read every single comment/e-mail and I appreciate every person who clicks here, you would not believe how often you make my day.

I hope each and every one of you has a wonderful Thanksgiving with lots to be thankful for. I will be signing off for the week because frankly I am t-i-r-e-d and there is a lot to be done before taking some time off. I will be back next week though, hopefully refreshed and ready to go. Emily Joy Designs and Henry

When Henry was born I knew I wanted professional newborn pictures taken but I was intimidated and overwhelmed and I was not sure which direction to go. At six weeks I decided it was time; no longer a "new" newborn the clock was ticking. He had already changed so much from birth (and so much since these were taken)! So I called Emily Joy with Emily Joy Designs and I am so glad I did. Here is a small sampling of Henry's pictures and I could not be more pleased (especially since he was not cooperating that day).

I was nervous to have someone come take pictures since Henry and I were still figuring things out but she made me feel so comfortable, even when he was pitching a fit. As a mom (soon to be of three) Emily understands how to work with babies and children which was comforting to me. I could not recommend her services more! Love The One You're With- Inside Out Design

Today I have the most wonderful Sherri guest blogging for me. I know I have said

this before, but Sherri is one of those people who you

really feel like you know after reading her blog Inside Out Design.

The other day I read this recent post and was brought to tears. Maybe it is still the hormones, or maybe it is having a baby in our "very tiny but special to us first home" but it really spoke to me. Anyhoo, I am honored to have Sherri here today so without further adieu...

When Marianne asked me to contribute to her 'Love The One You're With' series, I had a hard time deciding which room to choose. Do I choose the one I enjoy looking at the most or the one that holds the most memories? I decided to show you the one I love looking at the most. It is the one room in my house that is always peaceful, has no television, is used mostly for family gatherings and always looks clean (even if it isn't).

I love to sit in here and read a book, visit with friends and open gifts on Christmas morning. This room is also the first thing you see when you walk through our front door and it feels the most like 'me'. When we first bought our house 24 years ago, the "living room" was a narrow space that was basically a pass-through from the bedroom wing hallway to the kitchen. Because of that, it was a hard room to space plan.

Over the years we made some changes. We relocated the front entrance, moved the hallway opening so it was not in the middle of the room and created an 'entrance' by adding a courtyard in the front. It is not a big house by today's standards and I never thought it would be our stay-in-forever-house. There are many things I would love to change (a larger dining room for one!) but it is our home and it holds so many memories I do not know if I could ever give it up. We have watched our two beautiful daughters grow up in this house and are blessed to be enjoying our new granddaughter here as well.

I have always liked white and except for a short phase where I tried to 'conform' I have had a white sofa. I found that it was the easiest to care for with small children (and even more so when they became teenagers) because I could clean it and it would never fade. I have had my current sofa for 12 years now. It has had red wine spilled on it, chocolate and who knows what else but all I have to do is throw the slipcover in the wash or spot clean it and it is as good as new.

For me, white just feels fresh and gives me a feeling of calm. It is also easy to throw in pops of color when I am in the mood and gives me the ability to change things around; which I do a lot.

I originally bought the corner armoire to place a TV in but changed my mind. It holds my revolving accessories and overflow of platters and serving pieces and balances out the fireplace in in the opposite corner.

The decor has evolved over the years. It was never decorated like I would do for a client - all at once and put together; instead pieces were added here and there, little by little - mostly discounted furniture I found while shopping for clients or perusing through HomeGoods. I tend to buy pieces that I love and don't put too much thought into where it will end up. It all gets moved around anyway!

Last summer I brought in the white cabinet that used to be in my daughter's room to give the room and lighter look. It was an inexpensive Ikea piece that was intended to hold my daughter's school books but I have to say, I am really enjoying it in the living room.

This fall has flown by in such a whirlwind I find myself less than a week away from Halloween without so much as one pumpkin. Usually as soon as there is a chill in the air you can spot mums, gourds and pumpkins of all varieties peppering our porch. I love decorating for Halloween and the fall but this doesn't seem to be the year. There is always next year though and these will serve as inspiration. That reminds me, any suggestions for a good costume for Henry or 8 week old babies in general?

I am not sure if I have professed my love for Ellen DeGeneres on here or not. If not, let me just tell you that I do in fact LOVE Ellen. When I worked from home I would try to do paperwork/billing (ugh) when she was on so it was not as tedious. Then when I moved in to my office Ellen was what I would watch on DVR when I came home to unwind. Now, with Henry, Ellen has kept me company during those middle of the night feedings when you are pretty sure you are the only soul on earth awake. She is a great cure for loneliness.

However, this post is not an ad for the Ellen DeGeneres show. I was so excited when I heard her house was going to be in Architectural Digest and it did not disappoint. I am not sure exactly what I expected but I love what I saw....

This is one happy baby. Why is he so jovial you might ask? I believe it has something to do with the amazing blanket beneath him. Last week I got a package in the mail from three bloggers I am lucky enough to call good friends- Camila, Lauren and Lindsay. I wish you could have seen my delight when pulled out this blanket...

I turned to Patrick and said, "Isn't this gorgeous? I swear it looks hand blocked!" Little did I know the story behind it. Turns out, the middle layer and edging are hand block printed with natural dyes. Camila informed me it was from a company Mela & Roam started by Courtney Barton, author of Inside the Loop, one of the first blogs I ever read.

These blankets are amazing but so are the one of the kind vintage textiles found while on her travels...Definitely worth taking a look at Mela & Roam. Thank you friends for such a perfect gift!

A New Piece of Art

For our anniversary gift to each other we knew we wanted to buy a piece of art and this time we knew exactly who we wanted the artist to be. In Oxford, MS, where we both went to school there is a restaurant, Ajax, which happens to be one my favorite places in the whole world. It is what you could probably call a dive restaurant but it feel like home to us. Anyhoo, it is filled with folk-type art, several from a Memphis artist named Lamar Sorrento.

I don't know if it is the strong connection to a place I love, but there is something about his primitive paintings that I can't get enough of. When it came to choosing a piece we knew this was the one....especially when we saw this detail....

Bo Diddley, McComb, MS- Patrick's home town. We loved that this painting was about Mississippi but once we saw Bo we knew it was meant to be. Love it. Changing our whole dining room around it, hence the dark paint swatches. I will let you know how it goes, may take a while...

I am thrilled to have a fellow Birmingham blogger and friend Jennifer as a guest blogger.The Newlywed Diaries is one of the first blogs I read, even before I knew Jennifer. I have loved following along with her life from the changes to her house to the birth of her sweet girl. I am so excited to have her here today!

This series has really taken on new meaning in the last year, as we became parents and I left my full-time career to stay at home with our little girl. Dropping my income has been an adjustment, and the projects around our 1959 rancher have taken a backseat to oh, say DIAPERS. We are definitely learning to love the one we're with - for better or worse. Here are a few things that keep me in love with our imperfect - yet perfect for us - little home.

Learn to admire without the need to acquire. I can't take credit for this one; Erika wrote about hearing that phrase during a sermon a couple of years ago, and it still resonates with me. I'll admit that I like to shop, but have found that it can be just as fun to get out and about, look around, get ideas and go home without the anxiety that would come with spending money needlessly.

Keep a "have list," instead of a "wish list." Don't get me wrong, wish lists are great. Goals and priorities are important, but it can be so easy to get caught up in what you wish you had, that you lose appreciation for what you already have. It's hard, believe me. These days there is a design blog on every corner, and it seems that every minute there is something new to love on Pinterest.

I read once that comparison kills contentment, and find it to be more than true. I may wake up feeling completely content and happy, and one look at a friend's stinkin' fabulous new kitchen or something beautiful I've pinned, and suddenly, nothing I have is good enough. Sure, there are always improvements that we can make, but the truth is, when I look at what we have and have been blessed with without the but-everyone-else-has-more goggles, I am moved to tears. We have so much. And it is enough.

It is easy to get bored with the current fabrics and wallpapers when you see them all the time so it is nice when something fresh comes along. One Month

A lot of you have asked for Henry updates. Since it takes me on average 2 weeks to return a call or e-mail these days I figured I would do a post. This past weekend he turned one month old. I can't believe how fast time has flown by. It has been wonderful but it has also been hard. I am still trying to get used to the adjustments, especially extreme lack of sleep. Every moment has been amazing though...This picture features him in his first Ole Miss onsie, I don't blame him for being so upset...it is a tough life being a OM fan.

I had to include this picture because my best friend gave him the Rolling Stones onsie. Only those who know you so well could give such a perfect gift. Thanks Dew!

Also, several people have asked about Harry (dog). He appreciates it. I can report he has not been neglected...too much. I think when I moved my office out of the house it was a lot harder for him than the newest addition to the family.See the sign in the background of the picture above? Another guest post by another fabulous blogger! I was lucky enough to meet Cristin a year ago in New York and I have been a big fan since. There is a lot to love about her blog but her guest post series "What Would You Do" is my favorite. So happy to have her here!

First off, I am so excited for the arrival of Marianne’s darling baby boy! I had the pleasure of meeting her last year NYC and I can confirm she's darling. And I just know she is going to be an amazing mother and hope she is enjoying this most special time with her newborn. Marianne, I wish you much love and sleep!

I am also thrilled to be part of Marianne's Love The One You’re With series. It is easy for many of us to focus on the aspects of our homes that need to change, rather than on the beautiful spaces that bring us joy and positive energy.

One such room in my home is our dining room. I love the the open and airy feel, the bank of beautiful windows and the furnishings. It is just a feel good space and a place I enjoy spending time with my family every day.

It’s an eclectic space and pieces have been added over time. An antique Chinese cabinet, reproduction French cane back chairs and a vintage chrome & glass display case have all found a home in our dining room.

Some of my favorite items in the room include various styles of artwork, a cow hide rug {added most recently} and a vintage chrome cart that I purchased at an estate sale. It was originally used as a TV stand, but today it makes a great tea or bar cart.

Hey everyone. I'm Naomi from Design Manifest and I need to be reminded daily to love what I've got. I am your typical OCD redecorator type. I'm always looking at my space with a critical eye- analyzing what needs to be improved, what editing can bring a better balance, etc etc. But the truth of the matter is that I am so lucky to live in a beautiful loft. That's why I love Marianne's series so much, it's helped me appreciate the good stuff.

So let me give you a little tour of a few areas.

This is one section of my living room. I recently added a slipcover to a modern sofa and I love how it's changed the personality of my entire space.

Nearly everything I own has been found at flea markets, estate sales, craigslist, or Ebay. I just don't have the budget or commitment to spend more right now. I scored my glass coffee table for $30! What's not to love about that?

I found this painting in my grandmother's basement and paired with two Ikea Rast cabinets. A little black paint and some new hardware totally changed their look.

I have a serious weakness for La Fiorentina fabric so I splurged on this entry bench. I paired it with a free mirror. It was a little small, so I painted a frame around it to make it pop.

I dressed up my Ikea bookcase with plate mirror backs and lots of pretties. The pop art was also found in my grandmother's basement. My nana's house is so stylish, even the basement looks better than my pad!

Since I have an open loft with 20' ceilings, I left most of the walls white. But I did paint a bold blue in my office nook. I painted a second-hand parsons desk hot pink. I just love that blue pink contrast.

One last thing I love- my clerestory windows! Every time I look up at the ceiling I smile.

So those are just a few elements of my apartment I love. I hope you enjoyed them too. Looking back at these now, I'm noticing how much pink I have! I swear it isn't as obvious in real life.

Remember this chair from this post?It is back from the upholsters and I love it! The nursery is almost done, some little things are left and then pictures to follow.
The only problem with the chair is it was supposed to have a band around the bottom in the darker contrast fabric but it was left off. I am still debating if I will have it added (a pain for everyone involved but details are important) or just leave it.

One of the best parts of being pregnant and now having a new born is the kindness of friends and strangers. I was blown away by all the well wishes I received from random people in stores, etc. while pregnant. While in Atlanta for Market a homeless man crossed the street and approached us. I assumed he was coming to ask for money but instead he came over to say congratulations and wish me the best of luck...and that was it, on he went. I have thought about that moment so many times since for two reasons- feeling bad for being assumptive about him and how his simple, kind words touched me so much. Now with a baby, support and generosity from friends and family is abundant and I am filled with gratitude. It makes you think what the world would be like if we were all just a little kinder to each other, not just during special times but on a small, simple everyday basis.

"Don’t just pretend to love others. Really love them. Hate what is wrong. Hold tightly to what is good. Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. One week ago we were welcoming Henry into the world, it is hard to believe it has already been 7 days! Since then we have been doing a little of this and little of that. Henry has been working on his tan (or decreasing it I should say)...

Which we are happy to say is all cleared up. And while I am not working for a while that doesn't mean that the deliveries stop, they just come to the house instead of the office.Which meant HBS experienced his first job with MSI, delegating the deliveries (please excuse the wet hair, etc. I was lucky to even be dressed!)...

I loved everything that came in for clients, but I am most excited about this art/photography, can't wait to show you when it gets to its final destination- a law office fittingly.We have been getting used to being a family of three, the best transition one could ask for...
And in case you were wondering (although probably not) the stumps have lost their bark thanks to some help from Patrick (more on that later).
Hopefully very soon this one will make its way to the nursery as a side table. As you can tell it still needs a lot of work. Thank you for all the advice from this post. We have followed every comment and researched where you said to go, so helpful!

I Would Like To Introduce You To Henry Strong

On August 25th we welcomed our son Henry Bihl Strong to the world. We have not stopped smiling since. The whole experience has been breathtaking and more than words could ever express.

Henry is Patrick's middle name and was his Grandfather's name. Bihl is my Mom's maiden name.

We have spent every day since just staring at this face...and thanking God for such a blessing.

Thank you all for all the e-mails, calls and comments. You don't know how much they have meant to me. I am so lucky to have such amazing and wonderful people in my life.

The Nursery: Ceiling and Light

After a long search for wallpaper for the nursery walls, then wallpaper for the ceiling we decided to paint the ceiling. I went through several designs (these were just the beginning).....

I could have (and might have, ahem) gone a little crazy with the design but since Patrick volunteered to take on the challenge we decided to keep it somewhat "simple"- straight lines.

I knew I wanted to do tone on tone and gray, but after that I was relatively open to the exact shade. We had trim paint left over so I decided to use that as the darker color. I also liked that is was a gloss finish, something unexpected since the lighter color was an eggshell finish
I know the light fixture above was a favorite of many of you but don't worry, it went to a good home- our guest bedroom (which reallllly needed it). For the nursery light I knew what I wanted from the moment I saw it a year and half ago at Market.
I instantly loved the whimsical feel of the recycled styrofoam fixture but I knew it would have to be the right room. When we found out we were pregnant I knew just where it would find a home.

I know it is a little out there, a sentiment many, including the electrician, have conveyed to me but I could not love it more. It is unique and adds a playfulness the room needed.

No, it is not your eyes playing tricks on you, it does look like the lines to the right are slightly uneven. I can assure you, after hours of taping, leveling and measuring the lines are perfect. It turns out that sometimes you don't know you have a huge dip in your ceiling until you decide to draw attention to it. C'est la vie.

So while I do still dream of wallpapered ceiling I could not be happier with the way things are looking overhead.
